A 20 year old Pakistani lady identified as Muzammil Bibi was found strangled and hung on a tree after resisting rape attempts by three men. Police in Pakistan say the young lady was accosted by the men in a field at the densely populated Punjab province and when she tried to resist being raped, they beat her up, raped her, strangled her and afterwards hung her on a tree. Speaking on the incident, Pakistani Senior Police Officer, Sadaqat Ali Chohan expressed shock, saying this was the first time such a thing would happen in Pakistan. “This is the first time in my 22 years of service in the police that I have seen such a case where a girl was raped in this way and found hanging from a tree. We have heard of such cases in India but never in Pakistan. The girl’s clothes were torn. We took her down and moved her to hospital. Her body had signs of resistance. We have arrested three individuals who have confessed o the crime” he said Police said her parents spent all night looking for her and found her body hanging the next morning. A married lady I was discussing with asked me a question. What would I do if after I got married, my husband cheated on me? I didn’t have to think about it for one second cos its an issue I have delibrated on for a long time. My answer was I would swiftly reciprocate without missing a step. She seemed appalled by my response. Laughed at my naivete, couldn’t comprehend why such a thing would even cross my mind. Her advise and even though it was given in good conscience, was that if a husband cheats on his wife, the wife should immediately start battling both real and imaginary mistresses. Why was it sad to me? Cos I have heard it over a million times. They say two wrongs will not make a right, they also say its a woman’s duty to go into prayer mode, find a hobby, focus on her children. What they never tell you is the solution for this problem.. Granted there are so many other issues people face in marriages, what is acceptable to one couple could be a deal breaker for another. For a woman who can work through other issues buut finds infidelity unacceptable, everyone mocks her in our society. All men cheat. Where will you go, no one else will have you. The other guys you might meet are even worse. Men are scarce so hold on and suck it up. Plenty women waiting to take your husband when you leave. Are you going to leave all you have worked for behind. The babe must be using juju. When I said sad, it was quite heartbreaking hearing this once more, especially from a woman like myself. Not because she had this particular ideology but because it is expected that all women live by this. Many things went through my mind because living in a way that demeans you and causes you so much pain, being helpless to do anything about it, like its some kind of rite of passage, a certainty, something that comes with the territory of being a Nigerian wife. She looked at me like I was crazy, I suddenly heard the sound of shackles awaiting me in the future. It was sad because is this what unmarried women have to look forward to? Cheating wives may not be the solution but what is? How can husbands know the pain of infidelity unless there is reciprocity? She said how can you let another woman take what belongs to you and I also wondered if all husbands belonged to their wives. I wonder about fighting for the man you love. Surely love forgives and forgets and if there is true repentance, love can overcome but should love forgive over and over and over again without turning into something that used to be, but is now cold and empty. When its gets to that point, what exactly are you fighting for as a wife. When its clear that he no longer belongs to you, what are you fighting for? I want to hear from the women. Do you honestly believe you don’t have a right to happiness, some semblance of sanity, to enjoy your marriage. Do you believe there isn’t a better man out there, that they are all flawed in this way? Do you think you deserve whatever indignity and indifference you are subjected to? I also wonder about our hypocrisy. We condemn muslims for polygamy whilst we allow our men run around with whomever they like, as many as they like. We use the bible as reference only when it suits us. Are we really God fearing as we claim to be. I felt shame to call myself a woman. Just because some choose to give up hope and continue persevering doesn’t mean the rest should not aspire to a more fufilling life. Finally the most ridiculous one that says the next guy is worse, goes to show a complete lack of faith in Nigerian men as a whole. The devil you know is still a devil, so what are you, a child of God, cohabiting with a devil for? Any woman that chooses to remain a faithful wife, condone infidelity, for whatever reason, has a right to do so. However, there are also women who are not interested in living this way, who have faith in the potential of a Nigerian husband, these women are not crazy. They just believe not all husbands are worth fighting for. When a woman says to another woman, all men cheat. Will you leave?, the next one is worse,blah blah blah. She says that cos she wants you to be like her. To suffer this pain like her. Heaven forbid that your husnand could possibly be one of the many exceptions. A middle-aged woman, Mrs. Monica Nwakpuke, barely escaped the cold hands of death when her husband, Paul, allegedly hired assassins to set her ablaze for giving birth to female children only. The culprit, Paul, a patent medicine dealer, who hails from Onuojgon Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, was alleged to have hired assassins to kill his wife because she could not give him a male child. The assassins were said to have trailed the woman to her father’s house where she was taking refuge over the lingering case of the male child issue with the purported aim of eliminating her. The attackers allegedly doused her with fuel, then set her on fire and left before she was taken to the hospital where she is battling for survival. The victim’s younger brother, Mr. Sunday Nwigbo, said for the past 12 years when Paul impregnated Monica when she was a student of Enyi Community Secondary School in Ikwo, there had been no genuine love between the husband and wife. Nwigbo disclosed that Paul became furious with his wife because she only gave birth to female children without a male child. A close family source added that since Paul impregnated his wife at a tender age before marriage, he had on several occasions sent her back to her parents before he allegedly hired the attackers to kill her. “Three men laid ambush for Monica in the night waiting for her when she came out to use the toilet and when she eventually came out that night, the attackers rushed and grabbed her while one of them slapped her repeatedly on her face before forcing her onto a standby motorcycle and sped off,” a the source narrated. Another source said that Monica was brought down from the motorcycle, stripped Unclad and blindfolded after which they poured fuel on her and set her ablaze. “When they discovered that she had been severely burnt to the extent that she may not survive it, they abandoned her and ran from the scene,” the source said. The victim is currently receiving treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki. In recent times the Nigerian state has been rocked by a spate of nation threatening attacks which did not only draw blood and shatter lives but struck at the very heart of the existence of the geo-political entity called Nigeria, the bloody killings and terrible kidnappings of innocent children elicited reactions which themselves have made clear to any objective observer that there are various strains and shades of Boko Haram, different in form , diverse in appearance but united in the clear objective of hate , bigotry and lack of empathy for others. From the criminal bandits who have relentlessly pursued a program of wanton killings and destructions… people who put young boys to the knife for no other reason than the fact that they decided to be educated … who kidnap young girls for bizarre and non understandable reasons… whose sole goal seems to be the unrelenting killing of innocents…. such I refer to as Boko Haram type 1. Their case is perhaps the most apparent, even if they are the most deadly… To muslim-denialists who deny the fact that Boko Haram exist … Muslims who continue to live under a self imposed delusion that Christians are responsible for boko haram, that the killings these bandits carry out are nothing but orchestrations of the Christian association of Nigeria or to some of them the machinations of the C.I.A in the quest for the destruction of Nigeria … as a muslim I find this position embarrassing, illogical and pathetic. Why? The late founder of boko haram , Muhammad Yusuf was known in Islamic circles as far back as 2002, his audio CDs were sold in shops publically as he spewed his warped version of what Islam and muslims should be …not only this , this man was confronted and debated on these heretical thoughts by the likes of Shaykh Jafar Mahmud Adam and Shaykh Muhammad Awwal Albanee Zaria , who both died mysteriously under a hail of bullets … stories abound amongst young gullible muslims about how they were indoctrinated and mobilized for sinister missions in and around Maiduguri … It is on record that security operatives battled strains of this atrocities before the present escalation and Muhammad Yusuf himself was arrested several times only to be released later … so when did CAN start sponsoring boko haram? Or does it seem reasonable that CAN would kill so many Christians so as to give muslims a bad name? People who think in this sorry way fail to realize that it was our late president Umar Musa Yar’adua (may Allah be pleased with him), himself a muslim, who issued the instruction that the sect be put down as brutally as possible… and it was soldiers and police men, who had muslims amongst them, who carried out these instruction. Why were there no screams that Christians were involved then? What about the numerous prisoners in the hands of the state? How come a sizable chunk of them are not Christians? Yes … we have had deranged or deluded individuals who tried to reap from the conflict …like the pastor of a town in Osun state who organized that his own church be terrorized by members of his congregation dressed as muslims so as to put the blame on muslims! However, extending his action to all Christians would be an irresponsible generalization based on the background information we have about boko haram. Arguments like this abound on social media … it is unfortunate how instead of facing our problems, some muslims are engrossed in the pathetic peddling of conspiracy theories! So also do we have Christian-propagandists who, blinded by hate and bigotry, see the boko haram phenomenon as an opportunity to deal with the muslims . The warped logic of such individuals can be given in the following syllogism: All members of Boko haram are muslims Boko haram members are terrorists Hence all muslims are terrorist! Arguments of this nature , unsound and invalid , readily falls into the hands of wolfs in sheep clothing who want to fan the embers of hate and bigotry by any means possible even if with arguments any sane person would recognize as false and illogical since not all muslims are members of boko haram! So also is the analogy that not all muslims are terrorists but all terrorists are muslims! What about Joseph Kony of Uganda? Who heads the lord’s republican army (LRA) which is fighting for the implementation of the biblical Ten Commandments?! In fact veteran human rights activist and lawyer Femi Falana, a Christian, wrote in an article (titled President Museveni’s Hypocritical Attack On Nigeria ) for Sahara Reporters on May 13 2014 “…It is indisputable that the record of atrocities of LRA is by far worse than that of the boko haram sect. It is common knowledge that the abduction of children and women is the hallmark of the LRA. From the account of the Human Rights Watch between 1987 and 2006 “at least 20, 000 Ugandan children were abducted. More than 1.9 million people were displaced from their homes into camps and tens of thousands of Ugandan civilians died. Nearly the entire population of Acholiland was displaced due to a combination of LRA actions and the Ugandan government’s forcible resettlement of people in camps. Living conditions in the camps were horrific, and for years communities were largely cut off from basic necessities. The death toll from cholera and other diseases was often higher than from the conflict itself”…” Would it be sane or logical for any Muslim to assert that all Christians are terrorists because of the warped theology of Joseph Kony? ‘Denialist’ and propagandist are boko haram type 2. And the most pathetic has been the reactions of politicians to the current crisis , every action and inaction is seen only through the lens of the upcoming elections…some people want their tribesman still in power , some want him out..Some people say it’s time for APC some say the PDP must continue…and they play fiddle, as Emperor Nero did, while the nation burns. Even the presidency is not free of confusion if the reactions of individuals close to the presidency is worth anything… a certain Christian leader close to the president believes boko haram is an Islamizing army ( never mind the fact that Muslims have lost their lives in droves) while a former Niger delta militant (by the way a Muslim) also close to the president believes it is a tribal war unleashed by people he calls “fulanis from futa jalon” , the presidency took more time than necessary in reacting to the abduction of the girls since it was considered mere political propaganda by the political opposition! In a scathing article (titled :Boko Haram : Military is the problem, not the solution) in ‘The Huffington Post Uk’ of June 16, 2014, Daniel Brett lashed our nation’s military and certain politicians of being in collusion with Boko Haram . It is shameful that the two most important institutions of the Nigerian state are so effectively ridiculed and pilloried by foreigners (like US Senator John McCain, former US secretary of state Hilary Clinton etc). If I were to summarize Daniel’s article I’ll simply say ‘we’ve become a banana republic!’ Let us call these individuals Boko Haram type 3! If the war of terror waged by Boko Haram type 1 is to be won, Boko Haram type 2 must be shamed and silenced; Boko Haram type 3 must be sanitized, reformed and purged! Julio Iturralde, 27, allegedly abused the babyinside a room at the Los Lunas Inn and Suites in Los Lunas on May 24, the Albuquerque Journal reports, while his girlfriend knocked on the door for several minutes and heard the infant screaming. When Iturralde finally let Jasmin Davis, 25, in the room, she said she saw a huge amount of blood in her daughter’s diaper. Davis told investigators that she wanted to take her daughter to a doctor, but Iturralde, who smoked meth, would not let her leave the room, according to KOAT. The next day she took the child to a hospital, where doctors contacted the police. Authorities believe that Iturralde s*xually assaulted the girl. Iturralde was arrested last month charged with criminal s*xual penetration of a child, false imprisonment and child abuse. Davis, who police say initially lied to police, was arrested Thursday and charged with suspicion of child abuse, tampering with evidence and conspiracy. The miraculous incident took place in Onitsha, while the General Overseer, Bishop Dr. Emeka Nwankpa was on the pulpit officiating a service to mark his birthday anniversary. <blockquote class='tr_bq'>Ifeanyi Oko whose joy knew no bounds, said he had never seen with his two eyes since he became conscious of the world and testified that he could now see everything before him. When asked if he had seen his mother before, he replied ‘no’! “This is my first time of seeing how my mother looks”, he said with joy.</blockquote> <a name='more'/> According to Daily Post, Bishop Nwankpa had during the service prophesied that there was a poor woman in the church whose family was undergoing persecution in the hands of his brother. Led by the spirit, Nwankpa continued his prophesy, urging the woman to come out to the pulpit as she had come with a blind boy. He revealed that the boy’s blindness was as a result of charms that had been used against him by his uncle. <div/> <div>As she approached the altar with her son, Bishop Nwankpa ordered the entire congregation to stretch their right hands to the altar and pray for the boy to regain his sight. After about five minutes, he wiped the boy’s face with a white handkerchief and he immediately regained his sight to the surprise of the entire worshippers. A senior official of Chibok LGA who spoke anonymously with Punch said the people in the community are now in great fear after they received the threat “Everyone in the LGA believes that the sect cannot be pocketed by security men. In an analysis posted on its website on June 13, 2014, the publication said: “Should (President) Jonathan stumble, jump or be pushed, a groundswell is building for some form of transitional government to tackle both the security crisis and the flagging morale of the military.” It did not say where the “groundswell” was building ─ in the military or political class ─ but made references to “ominous rumblings in the military”. <a name='more'/> An Aso Rock insider has dismissed the report as “absolute nonsense”. The publication described the “David Mark scenario” as one of the “messier options” before Nigeria, saying unnamed politicians “in Abuja think that Jonathan won’t win the PDP presidential nomination for next year’s elections, while others say he won’t even manage to hold on to power until the vote”. It said political confidence in Jonathan’s government is declining in the face of the Boko Haram insurgency and described the senate president as taking a harder line against the militants “than his counterparts at the top of government”. “He is also, we hear, outraged by the current state of the armed forces, whose soldiers say they lack basic supplies and weaponry,” Africa Confidential wrote. The publication was ambiguous on many issues ─ especially how a transitional government will legitimately emerge given the constitutional processes involved in democratic transfer of power in Nigeria. However, it hinted at a possible deadlock ahead of the 2015 presidential election, quoting “political insiders” as saying that “Jonathan won’t get the votes, state by state, to win the party’s presidential primaries but they don’t yet have a clear idea of who could”. A senior presidency official, who declined to be named, described the report as “kite flying” and an attempt to sell “a warped agenda” to the international community. “The premises are faulty and the conclusion is absolute nonsense,” he told TheCable. “ “There is no space for transitional government in our constitution. It took the kidnapping of 234 girls and explosive global out cry for world players to finally treat Boko Haram as terrorists. It is understood that had situations turned out a bit differently, Boko Haram could have been encouraged as some sort of ‘freedom fighters’ and armed by these global super powers and Arab crazy monarchs on a campaign against Nigeria. This possible utility is what delayed their classification as terrorists. This type of foreign policy is what played out in Afghanistan in the 70′s, is what played out in Libya, and is what was attempted in Syria and Iran. The Middle East rests on a precarious balance right now. No simple end to this extreme escalation in conflict can be seen in any near future. Iraq and Syria can never return to the same nations with their previous borders. Terror and terror financing from these purposely created terror monsters promises far reaching painful and deadly consequences across the entire globe. One, some of the fee components have been applied to students across all levels when in fact they can be justifiably limited to students at a particular level only; two, some of the charges included can still be reduced on compassionate grounds. On the basis of these principles, Government agrees that with the subsidized tuition fees and appropriate moderation of the incidental fees, a reduction ranging from 34 per cent to 60 per cent is possible across the different faculties and courses. Vanguard has gathered that some of the students who are already tired of the incessant delay in completing their academic career in the school, have welcomed nothing short of a 60 per cent reduction across the various faculties. Eagerly awaiting a pronouncement by the Governing Council, concerned stakeholders have kept their fingers crossed on whether there is an end in sight to the three-year crises rocking the university over the steep fees hike. Next line of action Meanwhile, the Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU-LASU, Dr. Idris Adekunle has refused to comment on the union’s next line of action over government’s 34-64 per cent reduction. Idris said: Nobody has officially notified us about the 34-60 per cent reduction. However, as the tuition fee is one of the three core demands that made our union to embark on an indefinite strike, I cannot take a decision unilaterally on this. We have to take this latest development to Congress later in the week, which will take decision on the way forward. As lecturers we owe it a duty to this country, not to keep our students on the streets unnecessarily. We pray that government will be sensitive to accede to our core demands for there to be an end in sight to these crises.
